Jordan Chang: Hello! Welcome back to the Late show with Jordan Chang. Today we welcome three special guests from the expedition to catch the giant sea creature causing havoc to several ships. Our first guest is marine biologist,  Professor Pierre Arronax. Welcome to the show!

Arronax: Glad to be here it's an honour.

Jordan Chang: The honour is all mine. Is it okay if I ask you some questions about your expedition?

Arronax: Ask away!

Jordan Chang: What do you believe the creature might be?

Arronax: I believe with all my heart the mighty creature is a giant narwhal

Jordan Chang: Interesting, but could it exist?

Arronax: Like I said to my harpooner, "But if they do not exist, mine obstinate harpooner, how explain the accident to the Scotia?"(1.4.29), I'm totally confident that nothing else could do that much damage to ships, and I am willing to prove it to you.

Jordan Chang: That will not be necessary, but I understand your reasoning. Another question, what made you want to be part of this voyage?

Arronax: In the beginning I was not planning on going on this trip, but a letter sent by J.B. Hobson persuaded me.

Jordan Chang: Why didn't you want to go?

Arronax: I have spent a long time away from France my home country and I miss it.

Jordan Chang: You must really love your country. Also, do you remember what was in the letter that persuaded you to join?

Arronax: Indeed! It said, "If you will consent to join the Abraham Lincoln in this expedition, the Government of the United States will with pleasure see France represented in the enterprise."(1.2.15) My country means the world to me and if  France could be represented on this voyage I will do it. There is a chance the beast might also stop by France and I can revisit my country.

Jordan Chang: Wow! You are really patriotic, and this voyage may be your life calling . One last question, when you were in the Nautilus, did you stop trying to increase your knowledge because you knew you would never leave the submarine?

Arronax: Being stuck in the submarine didn't stop my search of knowledge. Even if I would never get back to land the ocean was still filled with things I never seen or heard about, even in the Nautilus there is much to learn. When I was talking to Captain Nemo he said "Since you may never leave this submarine boat. Come into the saloon, it is our usual stud, and there you will learn all you want to know about the Nautilus"(1.11.91), I never stopped trying to learn.

Jordan Chang: Arronax you are truly a wise Professor always wanting to learn more. Thank you for being on the show it was an honour.

Arronax: It was no problem, it was an honour to be here.

Jordan Chang: Our next visitor is a serving boy to Professor Arronax, Conseil. Welcome to the show!

Conseil: Hello.

Jordan Chang: Do you mind answering a few questions about your voyage?

Conseil: I don't mind at all.

Jordan Chang: Arronax says you are really loyal and respectful to a fault is that true?

Conseil: I had followed him for the last ten years wherever science led and never complained.(1.3.17)

Jordan Chang: That is a long time serving on one person, you must really love him. Didn't you jump from the Abraham Lincoln to save Arronax from drowning?

Conseil: "The shock threw him into the sea, but being in my master's service, I followed him."(1.6.49) It was a natural instinct for me to jump to him and help.

Jordan Chang: You jumped in, knowing that the boat might leave, to save a friend. That is true friendship. Last question, are you always so calm in dangerous situations?

Conseil: I believe so because Master Land said "You are never out of temper, always calm: you would return thanks before grace, and die of hunger rather than complain!"(1.6.65) He believes I am to calm in these situations and to respectful for my own good.

Jordan Chang: You are truly noble Conseil. Thank you for joining us today.

Conseil: It is truly an honour Master Jordan.

Jordan Chang: Our final guest is the harpooner, Ned Land. Welcome fellow Canadian.

Land: Great to be on the show.

Jordan Chang: Being the only  Canadian you must have felt special?

Land: I don't really care, I only cared about hunting on the trip.

Jordan Chang: Can I ask you a few more questions?

Land: Of course go ahead.

Jordan Chang: What was your first impression of Arronax?

Land: Arronax is a smart intelligent man and a really good human being. I talked to him and told him about my adventures in the Polar Arctic, we had much in common being French, but I thought he was crazy. "As a whaler I have followed many a cetacean, harpooned a great number, and killed several; but however strong or well- armed they have been, neither their tails nor their weapons would have been able even to scratch the iron plates of a steamer." (1.3.26) That is why it was so hard for me to believe his accusation of a giant narwhal.

Jordan Chang: That is a good reason to believe that Arronax is wrong due to your great knowledge as a harpooner. Another question I have is, how did you feel being trapped in the Nautilus?

Land: I was furious being a prisoner of this strange ship. When  I saw the steward  I rushed for him, threw him down, and held him by the throat"(1.8.66)

Jordan Chang: Your temper was out of control you did strangle a steward that did nothing. It was a strange and dangerous situation you were in, so it was a natural instinct to do what you did. Last question, do you love the sea or the land more?

Land: Even though I love the sea, I love the land more. When I was in the Nautilus I saw my dream of fresh meat fade away.(1.15.116) When we were at the bottom of the sea, I knew I would never see land again, only if it's under the water.

Jordan Chang: Like your name you do love the land. We see that you are a strong Canadian that loves the land and hates anything that may lead you away from it. Thank you for being on the show.

Land: It was an honour to be back on land. Thank you!

Jordan Chang: Well that's it for the Late show with Jordan Chang, thank you for watching and learning about these three interesting people. Until next time, see you later.

The protagonist of the story Pierre Aronnax narrates his adventures while in the Nautilus. In around two thirds of the book, readers will start to learn more about Professor. Aronnax, he begins to show more and more of his arrogance and his obsessive nationalist behaviour. He believes that he knows every little tidbit in history just because he is a marine biologist. Within chapter eighteen Pierre states “For my part, I did not wish to bury with me my curious and novel studies. I had now the power to write the true book of the sea… I wished to see daylight” (Verne, 378) This reveals Pierre’s true intentions for boarding the Nautilus. What he wanted was to rush back to land and report his findings of the Nautilus, he does all this so he can be praised by others for his discoveries. “I had now the power to write the true book of the sea…I wished to see daylight” proves this. It can be interpreted as; he had all the power he needed to prove to the world that he is the one to discover the mighty beast of the sea, and that he wanted to hurry back home instead of being killed alongside his findings.

Another interesting character in this novel is Conseil, he serves his Master; Professor Aronnax, as his loyal servant. Conseil is a very trustworthy and dependable person to be with, and Conseil adores his Master Pierre. This causes him to do anything that his Master commands him to do; Pierre is the “brains” and Conseil is the “Brawn”. At one point Conseil’s bizarre servile mentality causes him to jump in after Pierre when he is thrown overboard into the sea. But there is a twist to his personality, when there was a cannibal attack Conseil had made a remarkably insightful statement. “A person can be both a cannibal and a decent man … just as a person can be both gluttonous and honorable. The one doesn’t exclude the other.”(Verne, 175) This quote is quite unexpected from Conseil due to his lack of awareness and empty mindedness. It even makes Pierre and Cpt. Nemo stagger. But this adds some dimension to his character rather than being just a Master-serving slave, he is now known to be someone that is more than what he seems.

The final major character within this novel is non-other than, the mysterious Captain Nemo. For the majority of the novel we are told nothing of his past, homeland, and the way he built the Nautilus by himself. His personality is pretty one-dimensional, but what the readers do know is that he cares for every single one of his crew members. Each time a single crewmate suffers death, he will bury them under the sea. “So I said he would, this man died in the night? Yes M.Aronnax. And he rests near his companions, in the coral cemetery? Yes forgotten by all else, but not by us…we dug the grave to seal them for eternity… and burying his face quickly in his hands, he tried in vain to suppress a sob…Yes, sir, [Out of reach] of  sharks and men. gravely replied the Captain.” (Verne, 199). This quote reveals that even though that Captain Nemo has no known history he still makes an impact to the readers. He created a cemetery underwater just for his dearly beloved companions. Two important lines here are; “Yes forgotten by all else, but not by us” and “He tried in vain to suppress a sob” both support that Nemo was not all that ruthless, but a man that deeply cares for every crewmate within and away the Nautilus. "[Out of Reach] of sharks and men. gravely replied the Captain." This reveals that Nemo may have had a horrifying experience with mankind above the surface in his past, thus resulting in the creation of the Nautilus so he can live away from society. Jules Verne yet again proves that he can emotionally attach readers to his characters even without much of a personality or history, and just a couple of lines.

Jakob: Hello everybody and welcome to the midday show with me, Jakob Miskiw. Tonight we have a very special show for you all. We have the captain of a very special ship, and two of his passengers, please welcome Captain Nemo, Ned Land, and Professor Pierre Aronnax. Welcome gentlemen.

Aronnax: It's a pleasure to be here.

Jakob: It's a pleasure to meet all of you, where are you all from?

Aronnax: I am from the great country of France sir.

Land: I am a Canadian, from Quebec.

Jakob: A fellow Canadian eh? Captain Nemo where are you from?

Nemo: From the Nautilus.

Jakob: I mean your country of origin.

Nemo: And I have told you, the Nautilus.

Jakob: Sir you cannot be-

Nemo: I have no life before the Nautilus, as it is my home.

Jakob: Alright fair enough, Professor Aronnax why are you aboard the Nautilus?

AronnaxMe and the Canadian were aboard the Abraham Lincoln in search of a great sea creature, a massive narwhal is what I predicted it was, but instead we found the magnificent machine built by Captain Nemo.

Jakob: Is that true Nemo? You built this ship?

Nemo: Yes I did, all under the noses of the "great nations" that supposedly rule this planet.

Jakob: How did you get the funds?

Nemo: I merely used the resources at hand, and used the bounty of the sea.

Jakob: The next question is for Mr Land, how are you enjoying your stay on the Nautilus?

Land: It good enough, lots to do, everyday is a new adventure, but I do get tired of the life on a submarine.

Jakob: Wow sounds fun. Professor, how do you spend your free time aboard the Nautilus?

Aronnax: Well I enjoy everything aboard the ship, I mostly follow the captain when I can and see what I can learn, and other times I like to read from the captains personal library.

Jakob: Mr Land, I hear you are an excellent harpooner, how do you keep your skills at their best?

Land: The captain let's me hunt, as long as I only hunt certain whales that he considers as "monsters".

Jakob: Captain, do you always take on passengers, or was this a one time deal?

Nemo: Well I never intended to take on these passengers, but I attacked the ship that they were on, they fell into my waters, and I took them as prisoners, but I knew who these men were and I treated them with the respect that they deserved, and now they are passengers upon my vessel.

Aronnax: And we are very grateful captain.

Jakob: Wow this is truly an amazing story. Everyone of you is so different yet so alike. Before we go I have one final question I want each of you to answer.

Land: Alright.

Jakob: What have you learned from your time aboard the Nautilus?

Land: I learned that the sea is a world all its own. It is totally untouched by man.

Jakob: And you Professor?

Arronax: I have learned the same things as my Canadian friend, but also that man can be a cruel
being. I have seen horrors aboard the Nautilus that I wish I had not, but I have also learned wonderful things that one cannot learn from living on the surface.

Jakob: Wow amazing, how about you Captain?

Nemo: I have learned a lot over my time on the Nautilus. I've learned that man can live on resources from the sea alone. I've also learned that money is totally unnecessary for man, and it is only useful for the greedy.

Jakob: Well that's all the time we have for today. Thank you gentlemen for coming in and as always, see you folks on your next lunch break!
